Whereas, this year marks the Twenty-fifth Anniversary of the
founding of Dances of India, the oldest East Indian dance company in
Missouri; and

promote ancient classical and folk dances of East India; and

Whereas, under the outstanding direction of choreographer Asha
Prem, the Dances of India company seeks not only to entertain but to also
educate its audience in the complex Eastern art; and

Whereas, throughout its history Dances of India has sought out
collaborative productions with other dance companies in order to create
distinctive dance programs designed to reach a larger cross-section of this
community; and

unique theatrical performance and we are fortunate to have such an important
cultural resource in our community; and

Whereas, in conjunction with its twenty-fifth anniversary celebration,
Dances of India will perform at Washington University's Edison Theatre the
weekend of September 21-23, 2001;

NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED by the Board of Alderman of the
City of St. Louis that we pause in our deliberations to recognize and honor
Asha Prem and the members of the Dances of India and we thank them for
twenty five years of inspiring entertainment and cultural enrichment in the
St. Louis community and we further direct the Clerk of this Board to spread
a copy of this Resolution across the minutes of these proceedings and to
prepare a commemorative copy to the end that it may be presented to our
honorees at a time and place deemed appropriate by the Sponsor.
